"...The journey was very difficult. They started by crossing the frozen Mississippi River. Then they had to stay in camps over the winter. They had to pull their wagons through thick mud in the spring. They built bridges and planted gardens as they traveled. They had to make a trail for the many pioneers that would come behind them, but it made the journey slower for them. Many people got sick, many ran out of food, and some were not strong enough to make the journey and had to be buried by their loved ones along the trail.
But finally on July 24, 1847 when Brigham’s wagon came over the crest of the mountain and he saw the Salt Lake Valley, he knew he had found the place of peace that Joseph Smith had envisioned as a gathering place for his people..."
