Exerpt from the story:
"For two days they wandered in the forest looking for home. On the third day they were weak from hunger and followed a snow-white bird they had seen. As they stumbled into a clearing they saw a house made of gingerbread. The windows were made of sugar, and the chimneys were sugar canes. They both rushed to the house and began eating eagerly from it. Then the voice of an old woman inside said, "Nibble, nibble, little mouse, who's that nibbling at my house?" The old woman invited them in and offered to feed them and give them nice beds to sleep in.
In the morning she locked Hansel in a cage and made Gretel cook for them. She wanted to fatten Hansel up.
Every day the witch went to the cage and asked Hansel to put out a finger so she could feel how fat he was getting. She couldn't see very well, so Hansel tricked her by sticking out a chicken bone each day. After a while the witch grew impatient and decided to eat him anyway..."
